March Recap

March... I had no idea what to expect.. well, I lie... I knew I needed to expect work, tenacity and some modicum of discipline. I set a lofty goal of 200 miles for the month and doubted I'd reach it, but as March rolled in like a Lion... we rolled it out like a fire storm.

I ended the month with 182 miles, 18 miles short of my goal. I'll take it. In the last 4 weeks I've run 206.9 miles, I'll take that as well. Would I say that I'm back? I wouldn't go that far just yet. BUt the trends point toward yes. Next Weeks race will decide that, as I suffer through 150 Miles at McNaughton Park. What matters most right now is that I've done the best training I could have done through the month of March. I know I am extremely underprepared for the race, but I'm feeling up to the challenge. Todays run was testament to that. As I ran 4 miles through town at 7:55 min pace, I glanced to the west to watch the setting sun, music blaring in my ears and realizing one thing is going to tell the tale in Illinois. How much I am able to suffer... and suffering is what I am good at. I felt great today. I'm not sore after Sunday's 30 and never was. Perhaps I am more prepared then I think. I'm excited to get out there. It's Ultra Time.. it's time to lay it all out there. Time to excel and succeed.

Of course in the coming weeks we'll prepare for the race with a preview of what's to come and review some race history from McNaughton Parks Past. And then of course there's the race to be had, 150 miles of Guts and hopefully Glory followed by one stellar race report. It's going to get busy on the blog, I hope you'll stay tuned.

The third and final day in San Fran was by far my favorite. The running was primo and it reminded me of some of my favorite runs back home. We parked at The Tennessee Valley parking area and headed down the Valley Trail to the beach. The beach is made of loose gravel and polished stone. The cliff sides continue to erode as the waves continue to batter against their fragile walls. The views were magnificent, the sky a deep blue and the sea a wonderful turquoise. As we ran down the valley trail I looked up at both sides to the sights of mountains with trails winding their way up and around.. I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

After checking out the cliffs and not being able to resist the urge to climb, we headed for what looked like a trail but was nothing more than an old fence posted area still dug out. Regardless, we followed the "trail" to the top of the ridge at which point we discovered like old bunkers built and used during the Second World War. We were treated with distant views of the Golden Gat Bridge with the City nestled behind it. It was a gorgeous warm day as the sun beat down on my back. We ran across the ridge and then headed back down into the valley.

After running back down into the valley I decided we were far from done for the day. Views earlier treated us to the sights of trails on the other side of the valley and up to the opposite ridge. We were treated with much of the same. Immaculately "paved" trails without a rock or root in sight. I tried my best to run as much of the uphill I could and made it about half way. I was huffing and puffing for sure, knowing that it was to be my last uphill of the week in San Fran. After that, we ran along the ridge looking out over the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean. As the sun beat down on and reflected off of the water, it was hard not to work on the sun burn I always wanted. Ick. After topping out on the ridge, I got tire dof holding back and decided to smoke the downhill back to the beach. I ran at 6:30 min mi - 6:00 min mile pace for as long as my legs would allow, at times feeling as though I was about to lose control and topple over in a heap. Luckily I still have the great leg control I've always had on downhills and enjoyed every quad pounding minute. Alyssa and I met up back at the beach where we soaked our tired and roasting feet in the water one last time before heading back up the valley to the car. The amazing running in San Fran had come to a close. I accomplished all of my goals.. I ran on Dipsea and on the Miwok 100K courses. I dipped my legs in the Pacific ocean for the first time and rubbed my hands against the sands of time. It was an amazing adventure this west coast trip and as always, these western adventures allow me the chance to reinvent myself. That source of self discovery once again rises to the surface to shine some light on your darker days. This is why the West is for me, and I long for the day when I get to pack up my belongings and move in the direction that the sun sets.

We made our way through the winding roads of the area and headed for Point Reyes National Seashore. Our plan today was to check out a map, run to the ocean and then head up and over Mount Wittenberg (1,407 ft). We decided to take the Bear Valley Trail down to Arch Rock. The trail was mellow for the most part, running primarily downhill to arch rock. Once we go to the Rock, we stood on the top and enjoyed more magnificent views of the seashore, where waves crashed ferociously against the cliff sides.

After enjoying the views we decided to stroll down to the water and check out the Arch. While down there we explored the cliff sides and the tidal pools which was full of creature. Lined Craps hid in tiny holes in the rocks, Sea Stars and Anemones sucked firmly onto rocks. It really was a neat place to explore and to be introduced to sea life I've never seen before.

After spending about an hour on the shore, we turned around and headed back up to the top of the arch where we continued our run. We headed for Mount Wittenberg. The trail rounded its way up and over a few false summits before we finally got to climbing the actual summit area. Somewhere near the top, we went off trail and took a shortcut to the top. While hiking through the grassy meadow, we looked up to see a herd of Deer munching on the area flora. We stopped and enjoyed our company as well as the vast views of the area seashore. It was beyond peaceful as a light breeze brushed across our faces.

After completing our run, we got in the car and drove to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. The ocean definitely made it a bit cooler on this side of the Point. We bundled up and walked out to the long staircase, which was closed, and enjoyed taking a look at the house. The views of the ocean from up here are vast and dizzying. Regardless, such a beautiful place.

I landed in San Fran around Noon on Tuesday and immediately found my host for the weekend, Alyssa Skye. We got in her sweet WRX Impreza and headed down to the Fisherman's Wharf for lunch. My first order of business was to down a wonderfully smooth Fat Tire Amber Ale, which I did accompanied by the munching of a Buffalo Burger. The wharf reminded me of some of the walk ways at Disney, tight wanderings with many color shops lining the walk way on each side. After lunch, we bought some chocolates and then headed to the Golden Gate Bridge. It's much larger then I thought it would be (size wise) but shorter distance wise at only 1.07 miles in length. After we parked on the North end of the bridge, we changed into our running gear and headed down the sidewalk and I fulfilled a childhood dream of mine to walk/run across the bridge. The bridge was noisy as all hell given the fact that US Highway 101 is what rushes across it's span. The sidewalk is crowded with walkers, runners, bikers and maintenance crews whose job is never ending. As we ran across the vast expanse, We could see Alcatraz to our East being engulfed by fog that was now shrouding the bridge itself. Once we got to the south end, we turned around and headed back to the side we started on.

After our Golden Gate adventure was over we continued to drive into Marin County and made our way along the winding roads to the Muir Woods parking lot. Here we filled up our water bottles and got on the Dipsea Trail. We started by running through the Redwood Forest as hyms of "This Land Is Our Land" resonated through my mind.

I find the trails to be so surprisingly easy to run. Not a rock or root to be found, I felt like I was cheating compared to what I am used to here in New Hampshire. Regardless, I was enjoying the hot and somewhat humid weather as I bounded up and over the large Marin Hills. After we crested the hill we were on, we headed down towards Stinson Beach where I put my feet into the Pacific Ocean for the first time in my life.

After visiting the gorgeous Stinson Beach, we turned back and went back to where we started via the Dipsea Trail, completing what is more commonly known as The Double Dipsea. It was an amazing first day in California and I was excited to have completed so much all ready while on my short visit.

Off To San Francisco

So I'm off to San Fran for the week. I'll return on Friday with many pictures and stories alike. I'm hoping running the trails out west will allow me to get the spark back in my training for the year to come. I feel so behind and out of shape... hopefully a few days running in Marin County will be good for the soul. Until I return..

Lacking Motivation

I'm totally lacking in motivation. This past weekend was amazing. I really felt like my legs had a lot more gas in them. I could have gone forever. BUt now that the race is done and the runners high has melted off, I find myself sitting in another post race slump. I lack motivation. I want to run but am unable to will myself towards it. Training is such a drag. I'm sick of winter, the top of my foot still hurts, when I run the arches of my feet hurt. I'm tired, constantly battling this mind numbing head cold... I need a break. And the break is coming next week. On Tuesday I fly out to San Francisco where I'll be spending the better part of 4 days running on trails through Muir Woods, Golden Gate State Park and other areas of Marin County. I'm excited because I hope running on the trails out west will re-ignite that spark that I need leading into the McNaughton Park 150. Right now I know that I can mentally run 150 miles. Physically I feel undertrained.... REALLY undertrained. I guess right now being mentally prepared for the next race is better than being physically prepared, because how DOES one train for a 150 mile slug fest anyway? I've been asked this question a few times now and have always lacked an answer. So far this year I have accomplished all of my goals. I did the Boston Prep x2, a 30 mile night run and 53 miles in the Snow. Im feeling strong physically, like I can go forever... I just can't motivate to continue to train and refine myself to where I need to be. I can see the upcoming season being very difficult to endure. But then again.. maybe things will change once the snow melts.

I think my depression still has a pretty solid hold on me. In fact, I'm pretty certain it does and this is why I am lacking in motivation. I was happy last week when my psychiatrist took me off of the Abilify. I feel like I'm making some progress and we'll see how much more progress is made next week when I see him again before the trip. I know that not everything is going to change over night and ever little step forward beats a step backward... I just want my drive back. I still get the ideas in my head... the ideas to accomplish great things. The idea to run further, faster, harder.... I just can't drive myself to do it and it's driving me crazy. This constant inner struggle continues and I hope the end is drawing near.

RR: Pittsfield Snowshoe Ultra

52.4 Miles.... in the Snow.

Eight of us stood huddled around each others cars on an unseasonably warm night in Central Vermont. At 10 pm the temperature still hovers near 50 and warm winds are howling through the valley town known as Pittsfield, VT. Six of us have plans to try and travel 52.4 miles on snow, what we were unsure of was how the conditions would play out. Two of us were only there to enjoy the night with us and we welcomed their company. As the clock passed 10, it was time to roll and we all started out walking down the snowmobile trail with our snowshoes in our hand. As we reached the first hill (one of many), it was apparent to us that snowshoes might not entirely be needed tonight. The warmer temps have melted the snow just enough to keep it sticky for us, though no less different than running through sand. The snowmobile trails here in town have been groomed all winter long and packed down by thousands of snowmobilers. It made for an immaculate surface. The only true obstacle we would entangle ourselves with during the night hours were the long patches of glazed ice that snuck up and out from the snow. From time to time, one of us would mistakingly venture out onto a patch and freeze frame, trying to figure out how to keep ones balance. As the battle began to become a losing one, we'd slide backwards down the mountain losing 3-10 feet depending on how long the patch is. It was quite a comic, yet hazardous, routine.

Our route for the first 26.2 miles (6,400' of gain) matched that of the 2007 Snowshoe Race Course. We followed snowmobile trails for all but 10 miles. The 10 miles off of the Snowmobile trails was run on South Hill Rd in Stockbridge Vermont. The road was a mushy dirty mess from the melting rays of sunshine. It was evident pretty early that snowshoes were not needed for this first 26.2 miles, a few of the boys opted to put theirs down at the support vehicle, others carried them back to our start/finish of each 13.1 mile loop and dropped them back in the cars then. Ray, Tom and I opted to carry ours all night. I carried mine on my new Nathan HPL #759 pack. In my pack was a jacket, extra gloves, hat and neck warmer. I was able to carry gels and S Caps! in the front waist pouches and boost in the top compartment. My snowshoes strapped snugly to the pack and I was all smiles as we travelled through the unusually warm night.

The moon shone brightly in the night sky as we made our rounds through the first loop. I twas so bright it could have been the sun. Winds howled at 25-30 mph from the south as the warm air bushed across our faces. South Hill is such an angry mountain with many temperature zones. Dying of warmth from the breezes one minute, we froze with cold breezes blowing off the snow in other instances. It was a crazy crazy night. As we looked up, stars filled the sky where the clouds were not. Tower cumulus clouds raced across the stratosphere from one end to the other. It was such a beautiful and surreal night and I was more than happy to be sharing it with 7 great friends.

A little more than halfway through the loop, we stopped to gather aid from Rik Robert's vehicle. We all ate things like trail mix, crackers, cheese, chocolates, and fruit. Some of the boys drank energy drinks and coffee shots from Starbucks. Anything to stay awake and keep moving, it's now approaching midnight and we still have a very long way to go. It's obvious that we are all at varying levels of fitness and want to go at various speeds. But the group does well in clinging together and waiting for each other at major intersections regardless of knowing which way to go or not. It's always nice when your group extends certain unwritten courtesy's to one another. It makes for a much more pleasant experience.

We march slowly up South Hill Road as the slick and soupy mud gets steeper and steeper as we go. Soon it flattens out, the winds pick back up and we meet at the top of the road before descending back into the happy valley once again. As we get off of South Hill Rd, we head back into the wilderness on local snowmobile trails. Our group spreads out and soon the trail of headlights bobbing their way down the hill side is every so evident in the night. Many of us have longed for this "ultra feel" for many months, and we're glad that it's back. I know that I am as various levels of euphoria begin t flow through my veins... I'm home again and I'm all smiles.

As we make our way back to the cars, it gives us all a chance to regroup. Some of the boys drop off their snowshoes and prepare for the next 13.1 mile loop of this first 26.2 miles of our adventure. Rik is feeling a bit under the weather and is opting to run the road back to his car, where he and Tim plan to wait for our arrival before heading home for the night. The rest of us eat, drink, continue to be merry and gather ourselves to travel back up and around the mountain one more time.

The clouds become less numerous in the night sky on this journey around and the moon begins to turn dark orange as it sets behind the mountains to our West. The winds begin to die and finally the temps drop to at or below freezing. As this happens, the once slushy SNowmobile trails are now solid crunchy icy and frozen rotten snow. We slip and slide, maneuver through puddles and deep mud puddles as our feet are now filled with frigid water. We make our stop at our aid station and bid Tim and Rik adieu as they take off for the night. We continue up South Hill Rd one last time as the group begins to slow a bit. It's getting awfully late, but this is why we are out here. To train at night in adverse conditions. I'll admit it, I was a bit bummed out, Bummed that we lucked out with the warm temps and lack of snow on this route. I wanted to do this entire journey in snowshoes, and I'm feeling cheated. We make our way down the frozen slopes of South Hill and Joe's one last time, and finish up at our cars.

We all pile in and head for the Aimee Farm to prepare for tomorrows Race. It's 4:45am. Adam and I decide to sleep in his car with a plan to wake up at 7am so we can get some breakfast at The Original General Store in town. Adam falls asleep quickly while I lay awake for about an hour longer, finally falling asleep around 5:30 and waking up at 6:30, one whole hour of sleep... OOoooo. We woke up to chilly morning air as the temps dropped into the lower 30's overnight. Amazing how cold you get when you stop moving. When I wake up from my nap I find that I've been shivering for some time and need to get some food into my stomach. We drive down to the store where I run into Jim Konopack and his dad. All of my old ultra friends begin to roll into town and it's so great to see them all once again. I miss this stuff in the "off season."

We all return to the start/finish area to pick up our bib's and goody bags. We pin our numbers to ourselves and wait for the start patiently. The race officially begins at 9am which gives us a little more than a 4 hour break in between each 26.2 mile session. This one however isn't going to be as easy as the first. 6.55 mile loops with 1,700' of elevation gain per loop all done on snowshoes. What ended up being an "get off easy" kind of night was about to turn into one white nightmare. The work was about to begin and 6 of us, were still toeing the line ready to take on the world. Jason Hayden, fill in race director, gave us our instructions as over 170 participants huddled around.

With snowshoes strapped on, I switched from my new pack to my new Nathan Elite 2V Plus waist pack. I noticed that Josh had moved his gear from his car to the side of the course, why didn't I think of that?! This kid came ready to race obviously, still unsure of how he was going to do. As I looked around I was proud to wish Zeke Zucker well, meet up with BIll Losey and smiled heartily at my 5 fellow travelers who were still geared up to do 26.2 miles more. We're tired, groggy and lacking sleep. We're hungry, spent, and all ready stiff and tight. It's going to be an epic journey. I'm most proud of Carl Asker, who has never been on snowshoes before. And Josh Robert who has yet to travel further than 13.1 on the instruments of snow destruction. And as I continue to look around.. the horn goes off and so does the race!

All of us "racers" took off into the first field. As each runner lifted their snowshoes from the frozen tundra, frozen bits of corn snow flew straight up into the air. It was interesting seeing everyone as we rounded the square field, I don't know when it began but there seemed to be quite the costume contest going on. It was comical at best. As we rounded the final turn we headed town the hill and towards the Tweed river. People passed us on the left and right as we were obviously some of the slower folks out there. The course is a mix of single track trails and snowmobile trails. The first half of the course was all climbing as we switch-backed our way to the top of Joe's where a Cabin Aid Station awaited us. And as always is at a Peak Race, the view from the top is exceptional.

After sucking down some cookies and half a banana, I left the top of the mountain with Josh who was still hanging with me.. or was I hanging with him. I had no idea at this point. I was starting to slow down all ready as the mountain tends to take quite a bit out of you, or maybe it was the 26.2 we all ready ran on rotting snow? Whatever it was, I knew we were in for quite a long day. It was Josh who said it best, "When you first came up with this idea I forgot to take into account what peak races were like. It's like trying to escape from a cereal bowl.. up on all sides." I got quite a laugh out of this analogy as we continued to tackle the ups and downs of the mountain and we made our way to the start/finish area.

During the second loop the sun continued to shine brightly as temps rose into the upper 40's. I was over dressed and sweating quite a bit. I was soaked actually. And I was slowing down quite a bit, only managing to run the easier downhills. I left Josh in the dust on the climb during the second loop, wondering if I would see him again. Adam was way ahead and Tom... Tom was smoking us completely. Ray and Carl were behind us and having a great time, smiling each time we saw them. But as I made my second round on the mountain a sharp pain began to form on the top of my left foot. I tried loosening my binding a bit and then my shoelaces, nothing was working and I resigned to the fact that as the day progressed it was just going to get worse and I'd have to deal with it.

During the third loop I slowed to a crawl and worked my way around the mountain mostly alone. Josh zipped ahead of me and at the top of the mountain I ran into Adam who was bonking hard core wishing he was at home. We both carried on down the trail before Adam took off on me. I would catch him and Josh back at the start finish and try to do the fourth lap together. But by then, it was obvious that we were all running different speeds if running at all. Myself, I had no run left as my foot was causing me to cringe and bend over in pain. I wanted nothing more than for this adventure to be over. I was tired, hungry and ready to quit. I had though of sitting down after 2 laps earlier in the day and here I was out there on a 4th. There was no debate, there was no question, only relentless forward progression. Josh hung with me on the final climb as we made our way to the top of Joe's one last time. When we got there it started to rain and the aid station crew had bailed on us all ready. Josh vowed to stay with me the rest of the way down the mountain, he was in no hurry and I was much appreciative of his gesture to end our magnificent adventure. After crossing the bridge and working our way back up the final hill to the finish, we saw Ray Zirblis coming in behind us. He was cold and ready to be done, he passed us and finished just ahead of us. We tried catching Adam but he ha us by 20 minutes. Tom lapped us all... and good ole Carl Asker came in not long after us. All 6 of us who started the 52.4 mile adventure...finished it.

I had no idea what to expect going into this adventure and I was surprised to see such a lack of deep snow in Pittsfield given the winter we've had in New England. I also really feel like I was cheated out of the opportunity to really do the entire distance on snowshoes, but I also won't complain because we all agreed that it would have been a completely different story if we had. It was interesting talking to folks who knew what we were up to. When they heard we did 26.2 at night they replied with, "So you're not doing 50 today." Like there was some written rule that we had to so the 50 miles consecutively without a break. I was kind of disapointed here too. But regardless of the disappointment, I'm proud of all 6 of us. We made it 52.4 miles in the snow, in March which is no east task. It's been hard training this winter as I'm struggled through quite a lull, but finally.. after this experience, after what we accomplished this weekend I can say... I'M BACK.

52.4 Miles of Snow

We never put the snowshoes on for the first 26.2 as they weren't needed. But I DID carry them.
First 26.2: 6 Hours 26 Minutes

The second 26.2 I did wear the snowshoes for as it was after all "The Race."
I finished in 8:41 or something close to that.

So my total "run time" was 15:07
Cumulative time (stopping between races and all the like) 19 hours 41 minutes

2009 Ultra Preview

The 2009 Ultra marathon season starts for me on Friday night in quaint little PIttsfield, VT. I wish I could offer some variety from last years schedule but, well.. its identical to last years schedule. Now that I've got my anemia under control and some other issues, I want to see how much better I can do at the races I enter. So below is a preview of the year and what my current goals are for each race.

March: Pittsfield Snowshoe Races
Distance: 50 miles
Thoughts: I've never gone 50 miles on a pair of snowshoes and anyone who has done the Pittsfield Snowshoe Marathon know that it is equivalent to any 50 miler. I'm totaling expecting a snowshoe 50 miler to have the equivalent to any 75-100 miler. I'm not sure I'm ready for such a task but with my April race fast approaching, this is going to be the perfect test of my current level of fitness and great mental training.

April: McNaughton Park Trail Runs
Distance: 150 Miles
Thoughts: I showed up last year... and I didn't show up last year. I was there physically and not mentally and I planned my travel arrangements a little too close to race finish times. With my eyes set on a quicker than logical finishing time, I was left running 100 miles in mud and walking away from a race not knowing if I could have done it. This years goal is to return to McNaughton Park and even though my training is a bit behind the curve... to struggle through 150 miles of dirt and get to the finish line of this race.

May: Massanutten Mountain Trails 100
Distance: 102.6 Miles
Goal: Sub 26 Hours
Thoughts: I have a bone to pick with this one. Last year diarrhea and chaff got the best of me as i walked in the last 50 miles begging for forgiveness. I'm looking forward to my return to Virginia to hopefully run on a dry/warm course giving it my all in getting to the sub 26 hour mark.

June: Pittsfield Peaks Ultra Challenge
Distance: 50 Miles
Goal: Sub 10 Hours
Thoughts: This is quickly becoming my home course. After breaking 12 hours last year, my goal is to break 10 this year. Now to figure out how to deal with the stinging nettle, oppressive heat and lung squashing humidity.

July: Vermont 100
Distance: 100 Miles
Goal: Sub 22 Hours
Thoughts: One of my favorite races. 2 previous runs, 2 buckles.. now I'm going for a third. Hoping to dip below the 22 hour mark. Training has all ready started.

August: Journey Running
Stay Tuned

September (1): Pisgah
Distance: 50K
Goal: Sub 6 Hours
Thoughts: Mudfest last year, praying for warm temps and using my better knowledge of the course to bring my time down.

September (2): Vermont 50
Distance: 50 Miles
Goal: Sub 9 Hours
Thoughts: I need to proove that sub 9 wasn't a fluke!

October: Run Across New Hampshire
Distance: TBD
Goal: Finish
Thoughts: I still need to determine if I'm going West to East again or North to South this time. Stay Tuned.

February Re-Cap

My goal for the month was 120 miles and I came up just shy, but not without giving it one hell of an effort in the final week of the month. It started with the 30 mile run last weekend and continued to progress when I saw Irun4Beer was closing in on me with his monthly miles. I'll be damned if I let the rookie beat me so I picked it up managing to run 6 out of the last 7 days of the month. I'm feeling good and am finding my groove once again. Now to start picking up the daily miles...

Looking towards March. My monthly goal for March is to get as close to 200 miles for the month as I can. Thats quite an increase from 108 miles so we'll see how it goes. My main focus is getting as prepared for the McNaughton Park 150 as I can possibly get. The month will start with tapering for and racing in the Pittsfield Snowshoe 50 Miler. Then we head to California for Spring Break to get in some trail running (sorry no Couch Island this year). And the rest is just going to be solid training miles to round it all out. 200 miles is not too far fetched, but its going to take some work, protein, sleep and finesse. We shall see. Here's to March!
