I'm Baaaacccckkkk....

Wow... how time flies. It is great to be home again but I'll admit that I'm all ready missing my time and relationship with the forest. So where the hell have I been you ask? I'll fill you in on all the fine tuned details later with some stellar reports, but for now I'll give you the short. It started with Camping with Sarah in Crawford Notch, NH where we enjoyed great weather and a magical day hike through a part of the Pemi Wilderness I've yet to travel. We then came home to enjoy a friends Wedding which was quickly followed by my leaving for my final class of the School Year. My class was an 8 day canoe camping trip to The Adirondacks of New York. We paddled 60+ miles down the Raquette River while enduring 5 days of rain and yes... even some snow. Finally.. yesterday I returned to Pittsfield, VT to mark the Bloodroot Loop for this weekends Pittsfield Peaks Ultra Challenge!

Its been a great stretch of days/weeks and as good as it is to be home.. nothing is better then the simple life in the woods. In the coming days I'd like to share some of my adventures with you but we're going to be working a bit backwards. Stay tuned for Pittsfield Peaks!

I'm Back!

You know you've been in the woods too long when...

  1. John, what are the trail conditions on the Bloodroot Mtn Loop? Same as last year? or muddier?

  2. Things are a bit different out there this year so listen up. One thing that is the same are soggy, wet, muddy conditions. Except the mud has moved around a bit compared to years past. There is plenty of it out there. The Stinging Nettle is about Knee High which is quite a bit higher then the usual ankle length. There are some wildlife considerations. We saw a moose on the course and PLENTY of bear scat. But the real nuisance that is sure to affect us on the course are the Grouse. Grouse are birds that look like oversized Chickens. If you come across this bird, its defense mechanism is to play hurt (it pretends to have a broken wing and whimpers around). Once you get close.. the bird WILL attack you. If you see this... give it plenty of room and you'll be fine. Other than that... enjoy the pain and feel the burn!

Thanks for the update. Grouse are pretty tasty too, mmm good. Are you planning on doing another Pemi 50K this year?? I would like to join in if it's not on my Guard weekend.
    -See you in Pittsfield
    Thanks again
