As the usual post race foot swelling began to diminish following last weeks Vermont 50, I became alarmed on Wednesday of a pain in my foot/ankle. I thought nothing of it and continued with my daily routines but opting not to run, hoping ti would get better. As Thursday rolled around I spent the night at work hobbling around the store in some elevated discomfort. On Friday I went out for my first run since the VT50 and it wasn't too bad during the run but I had a feeling I shouldn't have gone just yet...
Today... my left foot is swollen below my ankle. There is a rather large and alarming bruised area and when I so far as move my foot slightly, I can feel the tightness under my ankle traveling down into the bottom of my foot (lateral side). I'm horrified to be the proud owner of a sprained Peroneus Brevis (See Diagram Below). It is really uncomfortable as I feel like I'm lugging a club around rather than a foot.

I know exactly when it happened too. I was running from Goodmans (39 miles) to Johnsons (45 Miles) in the Vermont 50 last weekend. In a moment of lackluster concentration (Thinking about final split times and possible finish times.. DOH!) I rolled my ankle hard on a slippery root on the course. Usually I run something like this off with ease... but it looks like an ankle roll finally caught me.
So with this ailment I continue a modified taper for the Run Across New Hampshire. If the run was today or tomorrow.. the fact is that there is NO way I would even make it the first 18 miles into Keene... never-mind 124 miles across the entire state. The modified taper is now no longer running short miles... its running NO miles. Rest, ibuprofen and icing. I'll be wearing an air cast for extra support as I take to the next 2 weeks, say my prayers and hope this heals. Let the level of stress... INCREASE!

Dude...that sucks! Rest that puppy as long as needed! You have plenty of mileage/training already for your upcoming run on the 18th!
Best of luck, John. I'm nursing a sore back and can barely walk so we'll be healing together as we prepare for our races on the 18th/19th. Keep us posted.
